With its fine, velvety texture and lovely berry flavours this Australian red wine is perfect for all seasons. Not all Rutherglen reds are big tannic wines. St Leonards Cabernet Franc produces a distinctly lighter and more savoury style with a wonderful lifted aroma of red fruit and dried herbs. Well balanced with zippy acidity, lively fruit and just a hint of oak.


The minimal oak influence and natural savoury spice character of this Victorian red wine lends it to lighter herb based red meats rather than richer cuts and dishes. Try our St Leonards Vineyard Cabernet Franc with BBQ lamb or roasted poultry such as quail or duck.


This lighter style of red wine is not intended for long term cellaring and is best enjoyed within 3 years of vintage. Its versatile style is suitable for all seasons 


This Australian Cabernet Franc is rated 98 points with James Halliday 2017 Wine Companion.

This is one variety where the timing of harvest is crucial. We are looking to produce a light spicy wine, so we pick the fruit before it becomes overly ripe. The wine was fermented in open fermenters and hand plunged over 7 days before a gentle pressing in the old basket press, then transferred to old oak puncheons for 6 months.

Cabernet Franc is one of those versatile varieties that are hard to pin-down. It can be used successfully for anything from a rosé to a robust red. It does very well on our St Leonards Vineyard soils producing lively reds with lovely savoury characters. As with many varieties its original home is in France, where it makes light reds on the Loire and is one of the Bordeaux family of grapes used in traditional Claret.
