Elm-lined drive leads to grand turreted castle leads to a meal on the terrace, overlooking expansive lawns it's like something from a P.G. Wodehouse novel, but with vines. Chef Simon Arkless and the team at Terrace Restaurant continue to excel at finiessed European cooking in the heart of Rutherglen wine country. A meal may begin with a happy marriage of Kurobuta capocollo, black figs, smoked goat's curd and crisp watermelon radish or carefully plated but robustly flavoured char-grilled cuttlefish, chorizo, lombardo pepper, lemon and garlic cream. Mains step up the complexity with things like prosciutto-wrapped ballotine of chicken, accompanied by a parsnip puree, fondant potato and tarragon jus gras or char-grilled Bindaree black angus porterhouse, horseradish and green peppercorn butter and red wine sauce. Sometimes you'll spot the estate's own lamb on the evolving seasonal menu. Desserts such as pain perdu with roast blood plums, macadamia and white chocolate ice-cream are an excuse to consult the list of Rutherglen fortifieds.
