St Leonards Vineyard

An old favourite, relaunched in late 1997 with a range of premium wines, cleverly marketed through an attractive cellar door and bistro at the historic winery on the banks of the Murray. It is run by Eliza Brown (CEO), sister Angela (online communications manager) and brother Nick (vineyard and winery manager). They are perhaps better known as the trio who fulfil the same roles at All Saints Estate. Exports to the UK and the US.

5 Glasses – Red (Exceptional)

St Leonards Vineyard Durif 2017 - 95 points

This is benchmark durif, extracted sensitively before a run through an ancient basket press and maturation in French and American wood (16 months; 15%new) for half of the curve. The remainder was kept in the tank to retain fruit and freshness. The result is defined by the finely wrought saline tannins, highly details and crunchy; as much as it is by the opaque hue, the floral vibrancy and the cavalcade of dark fruit and coffee allusions. As elegant as it is sturdy; as curvaceous as it is pointed and long. Screwcap. 14.5% alc. To 2039 $32 NG

St Leonards Vineyard HIP SIP Tawny NV - 95 points

A blend of grenache, shiraz and Mataro. This is a delicious youthful tawny (circa 10 years in wood judging by colour), spooling dried raisin, lacquer, five-spice, woodsy porcini and crystalline ginger across a reel of dutiful freshness. I like this level of age due to its meld of sweet exuberance and savouriness. Vino-Lok. 17.3%alc. $22 NG

St Leonards Vineyard Classic Rutherglen Muscat NV - 95 points

Olive green encroaches on the rim suggesting the solera across which this muscat is blended has some depth. Butterscotch, cinnamon, lychee and Moroccan souk notes of clove and cardamom. These bind a grapey spiciness to a molasses richness and rancio depth. Compelling length. Screwcap. 18% alc. $35 NG
