"A visit to the Rutherglen region offers a chance to sample award-winning wines and impressive fare"
writes Matt Johnston.

"There are many different European influences within a few kilometers of each other - including French, German, Scottish and British - from when the area grew off the back of the gold rush in the 1870s. All Saints Estate, a popular venue for weddings, includes an impressive 'castle' built by two Scottish settlers who fired the bricks in kilns by the river. At the edge of the building is the hatted Terrace Restaurant run by top chef Simon Arkless.

Inside the halls where the wine is produced, there are grooves from where horses scuffed at the bricks before they were set to work in the vineyard.

Winemaker Nick Brown and siblings Eliza and Angela - along with Eliza's husband Denis Lucey,
also recently opened the fresh and fashionable Thousand Pound Wine Bar in Rutherglen."
