St Leonards Vineyard

An old favourite, relaunched in late 1997 with a range of premium wines, cleverly marketed through an attractive cellar door and bistro at the historic winery on the banks of the Murray. It is run by Eliza Brown (CEO), sister Angela (online communications manager) and brother Nick (vineyard and winery manager). They are perhaps better known as the trio who fulfil the same roles at All Saints Estate. Exports to the UK and the US.

4.5 Glasses (Highly Recommended)

Durif 2015 – 93 points

Damson plums and blackstrap licorice, cedary and laced with cinnamon. While full-bodied, the ripe tannins are sandy, and overall it’s not a big wine. A whiff of dusty old oak, in an old cellar, is pleasing. And there’s freshness to this, making it immediately accessible. Screwcap. 14.3% alc. To 2025 $28 JF

Shiraz 2016 – 92 points

Vibrant dark crimson; briary fruit with spiced plums, quite tangy and noticeable lemony acidity streaking right across the tight palate. While aged in a mix of seasoned French and American oak for 18 months, it makes its presence felt both in flavour, and a cedary and coconut character. A pleasingly balanced wine. Screwcap. 13.9% alc. To 2023 $32 JF

Cabernet Franc 2016 – 92 points

Pale-mid garnet-purple; some aniseed cake baking spices and panforte flavours mingle with the dark cherries and plums. It’s ripe but the tannins, and body are lithe; while it tapers off to a dry finish, it is easy to enjoy. Screwcap. 13% alc. To 2021 $32 JF

Durif 2016 – 91 points

Very good colour; sweetly-fruited and supple with a fragrance of licorice, warm earth, cedary oak and new leather. Full-bodied with furry big tannins, but in sync and, overall, very satisfying. Screwcap. 14% alc. To 2025 $32 JF

Classic Rutherglen Muscat NV – 91 points

Mid-mahogany with a ruby rim; it’s rich and balanced thanks to the acidity and its 15+ years ageing in old barrels, so while there’s an impression of sweetness, it’s not cloying. Tastes of candied peel, raisins in caramel fudge and a lemony note. 375ml. Screwcap. 18% alc. $35 JF
