Relaxed yet stylish dining in a country seat setting

Stately elms, the crunch of gravel under tyre, old-money turrets above gently tinkling fountains – these should all clash with the temporary feel of the Terrace’s tented dining room. But they don’t. Instead, this mix of the courtly and the convenient says relax a few notches, hit ‘linger’ and let the assured, gingham-shirted staff start you off with smoked butter on crusty bread followed by gleaming Moulting Bay oysters dressed in a tart vinaigrette. More smokiness appears in the form of the buttery mackerel rillettes paired with tangy picked heirloom carrots. Bitter witlof corrals just-done pork rack, crowned in a rich layer of sweet fat and ultra-thin, ultra-crisp crackling. Tender charred cuttlefish is enriched with paprika-heavy chorizo and fruity peppers while chunky, crisp-skinned slabs of briny, sweet kingfish appear on earthy pureed cauliflower. Each beautifully plated dish arrives matched to an estate wine (or not – your choice). Loosen the belt another notch and finish with a chocolate pavé.

Pro Tip

Loved the smoked butter? Pick some up from Indigo Food Co. to take home.
