The Chef

British born chef Simon Arkless' culinary career started in London at OXO and Harvey Nicholls' ‘Fifth Floor’ Michelin star restaurants. Several years later he met and married talented Australian chef, Cait Mitchelhill and they decided to move to Australia to bring up their young family. After establishing a strong reputation and following at The Elbow Room, Essendon;  Comme, Melbourne; and The Prince, St Kilda, Simon moved to North East Victoria and joined the team at Terrace and All Saints Estate as Head Chef in 2012.

Simon's menus are constantly evolving, influenced largely by fresh seasonal produce grown close by or a little farther afield as well as his European training. Since taking over the stoves at Terrace, he has re-written the culinary landscape of the Rutherglen Wine Region and draws customers from all over Australia. Simon designs the menus at St Leonards Vineyard Cafe that locals and visitors have come to love. He focuses on generously flavoured dishes and produce that complements the stand out location of St Leonards Vineyard.

Wine & Food Heritage

Opening in the early 1990's, St Leonards Vineyard was home to one of the first winery bistro's in Australia.  'Le Bistro' as it was known, was led by Brittany born chef, Michel Renoux (who now lives in Beechworth) and soon become a success with locals and tourists alike. Reviews in the local and regional food pages kept restaurant bookings constant and Michel was regularly invited to cook at interstate events.

Not unlike Terrace Restaurant today, Le Bistro offered diners a connection with the outdoors due to being situated between the cellar door and vineyard with uninterrupted views to the Murray River beyond. Michel focused on creating menus using the best local produce available ensuring guests had a memorable dining experience.

These days  the menu at St Leonards Vineyard Cafe is scaled back and serves a relaxed and rustic style menu for visitors during our monthly Music on The Murray events and regional festivals. Owners Eliza, Angela and Nicholas Brown, work with Simon and the team from Terrace Restaurant to offer food that is a reflection of the region and the bucolic winery surroundings.
